Signs of Roof Damage: What to Look For After a Storm

Roof damage can look inconspicuous. However, the truth is, any kind of deterioration can seriously affect the performance of your roof and result in improper insulation in your home, along with an increased electric bill. Roof damage is more than just a leaky ceiling. So, how do you identify roof damage, especially after a storm? Here’s a fool proof guide to assessing the integrity of your roof after a storm!

Curled or lifted shingles: As soon as shingles curl or lift, your roof reduces its efficiency to keep rain and snow from entering your home.

Missing or damaged tiles or shingles: When a roof is missing tiles or shingles, it should not be left unchecked. If not dealt with, this can cause more extensive damage to the roof as a whole.

Leaks in the attic or ceiling: Leaks are a tell tale sign of roof damage. When leaks are present, it shows water has been able to penetrate the roof, thus leaving your home leaky and compromised.

Discoloration or staining of the roof or walls: Visible discoloration can be a sign of external or internal roof damage. It can be caused by water infiltration, moss growth, or sun exposure damaging the sealant or paint on the roof. In some cases, it could even point to a chimney or venting issue, as heat and smoke can weaken the sealant surrounding roof penetrations.

Moss growth: Moss growth can indicate multiple issues in your roof, such as roofing material decay, poor ventilation, and an improper roof slope. This moss growth can eventually lead to further impairment, allowing water to seep in and cause further damage or even structural failure.
